Here's the part people forget when they head unprepared into the bush. If something goes wrong, it's not simply a matter of a well paid chopper crew winching them to safety. There's usually many agencies involved, medics from Ambulance Victoria, search crews from Victoria Police, rangers from Parks Victoria, volunteer rescue crews from Victoria State Emergency Service, sometimes rescue crews from CFA (Country Fire Authority), volunteers from Bush Search and Rescue Victoria and sometimes more. Whilst its "part of the job" for some rescuers, its donated time for the many volunteers.
As this post shows, its not just about the actual rescue, its all the training that goes into responding to a rescue. Mock scenarios, drawing on real life experiences.
And our emergency services are there to help when something goes wrong. As bushwalkers we know slips and falls happen, medical emergencies happen, snake bites happen. But consider this: do you want this time and effort spent on your rescue because you forgot to plan, you didn't take enough water, you didn't check the sunset time, you overestimated your own abilities, you went out unprepared, you didn't tell anyone where you were going?
As the weather warms up, now is a good time to take a few minutes to see that you are prepared for your upcoming hikes.
Here's a great, short article for going out on "just a quick hike". bushwalkingvictoria.org.au/heading-out-for-a-quick-hike-lessons-from-the-celine-cremer-tragedy/
And a massive thanks to all emergency services for all you do to keep hikers safe! ...

Walk the magnificent ridgelines of Mansfield's rolling hills from Glenroy Road/Terry Rd to Mansfield Botanic Park over Mt Terry and Mt Battery.
Full walk (rated moderate for experienced walkers): approx 18kms, Half walk: 8kms. For a brisk walker, the total estimated time is 4 hours.
This annual walk is an important education fundraiser for Friends of Venilale who sponsor scholarships for rural secondary and university students in Timor Leste.
It is the only opportunity for the public to hike this farmland and experience the beauty of spring in the hinterland paddocks of Mansfield. You will need to climb over fences using stiles and navigate paddock terrain through spring growth and occasional soggy dips - it's like being a child again and the kids will love it!

What a great program of walks!Kids or grandkids back at school? Maybe it’s time to get back out there. 🌿🥾
Spring is here, the days are getting longer, and there’s still plenty of 2026 left to explore.
Melton Bushwalkers is a friendly walking club that started in Melton but now brings together walkers from across Melbourne’s west — from the Lerderderg and Wombat State Forest to Riddells Creek, Trentham, Birdsland Reserve and beyond. We also head further afield, including Torquay and walks around Melbourne. We're fully affiliated with Bushwalking Victoria.
And there’s plenty coming up before the end of the year:
🌿 Lloyds Track, Wombat State Forest
🌳 Trentham Rail Trail
🥾 Birdsland Reserve, Beaconsfield Heights
🦘 Amblers & Kangaroo Circuit
🌲 Firth Park Circuit
🌊 Torquay – with an easy walk and BBQ lunch to finish the year
Whether you’re an experienced bushwalker or simply looking for a reason to get outside, get moving and discover some great places with our club.
📅 Check out our 2026 walk program and find a walk that suits you.
