Now is NOT the time to go sightseeing or adventuring through fire-affected areas.
Communities impacted by fire are dealing with shock, trauma and enormous uncertainty. Roads, tracks and infrastructure are damaged, there's 1000's of dangerous trees, access is restricted, and recovery will take time. Driving into affected towns, parks or remote areas adds pressure where it’s least needed, and can put you and others at risk.

***ALERT FOR CAMPING AND OUTDOOR RECREATION IN PARKS **
Forest Fire Management Victoria have advised that parks and forests will be closed to the public in the Wimmera, North Central, Northern Country and South West districts tomorrow (Friday 9 January 2026) due to the forecast Catastrophic Fire Danger Day.
**UPDATE - Parks Victoria have just released their park closures list: www.parks.vic.gov.au/news/2026/01/08/01/55/major-park-closures-friday-9-january?fbclid=IwY2xjawPM...
Conditions will be too dangerous to visit or stay in parks and forests.
You may not be be notified and you may not see closure signs or physical barriers. Leave early for your own safety, and to for the safety of rescuers.
Please share with anyone you know who may be in these areas.
Wimmera includes the Northern Grampians including Halls Gap, Mt Arapiles, St Arnaud, Horsham across to the SA border.
South West includes the Southern Grampians, Mt Cole/Buangor parks, Hamilton and the south coast from Apollo Bay to the SA border.
North Central includes Marysville, Castlemaine, Seymour and Marysville, including Lake Eildon.
Northern Country includes Bendigo, Echuca, Shepparton and along a section of the Murray River.

EXTREME FIRE DANGER - PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE BUSH
We promote safe, responsible bushwalking, and that means knowing when to stay away.
With Extreme Fire Danger forecast tomorrow for some parts of Victoria, Bushwalking Victoria urges everyone to stay out of the bush.
This is not a day for bushwalking.
Not a day to “duck out early”.
Not a day to take a chance.
On days like this, conditions can change in minutes. If something goes wrong, you may not be able to get out, and emergency services may not be able to get to you. Choosing to walk in Extreme conditions doesn’t just put you at risk, it puts CFA (Country Fire Authority) crews, Victoria State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers and other emergency services in danger if they are forced to respond.
We urge you to:
• Stay home
• Stay cool
• Stay informed
• Stay out of the bush
Areas forecast as Extreme Fire Danger, and Total Fire Ban are :
-Wimmera (Western Vic including Grampians),
-South West (includes the Otways and Great Ocean Road) and
-Central (including Melbourne, Geelong, Mornington Peninsula and beyond)
All other areas in Victoria are rated as High Fire Danger, with temps over 40 degrees in many areas.
