Information on the Alpine National Park/Dargo/Wonnangatta fire and closed parks in that region.Dargo - and surrounding forests, parks and roads - will stay closed to visitors this Australia Day long weekend.
We know this is usually a very popular time for tourists, but bushfires in the area are still active and could get worse in the hotter weather this weekend.
Hotter conditions can cause flare ups and additional fire activity - adding to the risk already existing from the Wonnangatta-Dargo 52,000 hectare fire complex. Conditions can change very quickly.
Do not illegally go camping or four-wheel driving in closed areas. Both for your own safety and that of our many firefighters and machinery operators who are in these areas carrying out important works.
There are so many other amazing areas across East Gippsland and the High Country that you can head out to explore instead - until conditions are safer and Dargo can welcome you back.
Current closures include:
• Parts of the Alpine National Park
• Mitchell River National Park
• State Forests around Dargo
• Blue Pool – and all sites north from there along Freestone Creek Road

Some great specific information on the Alpine NP fire, from Mike Dower, Operations Officer in the Heyfield Incident Control Centre and Area Chief Ranger for the Gippsland Alps, discussing park closures and planning your journey.
There are still many other beautiful areas in East Gippsland and the Victorian High Country that are open for you to visit.

Now is NOT the time to go sightseeing or adventuring through fire-affected areas.
Communities impacted by fire are dealing with shock, trauma and enormous uncertainty. Roads, tracks and infrastructure are damaged, there's 1000's of dangerous trees, access is restricted, and recovery will take time. Driving into affected towns, parks or remote areas adds pressure where it’s least needed, and can put you and others at risk.
We have put together an extensive list of:
- Park and track closures,
- How to support communities responsibly
- How to support local volunteer CFA brigades and Victoria State Emergency Service units
- How to give to charity so your donation really counts
