As Bushwalking Victoria's Federation Walks Liaison, it has been a privilege to work alongside the Friends of the Great South West Walk in delivering FedWalks 2026 in Portland.
More than 200 walkers came together to enjoy outstanding walks, great company, and the unique fellowship that bushwalking fosters. The event showcased not only the spectacular landscapes of southwest Victoria, but also the dedication, generosity and community spirit of the volunteers who made it all possible.
As a self-described bushwalking evangelist, I believe FedWalks represents the very best of our activity. It brings together walkers from clubs across Victoria and beyond, creates new friendships, strengthens existing connections, and introduces people to some of our state's finest walking destinations.
An enduring takeaway from FedWalks 2026 is the remarkable power of volunteer organisations. Whether it is a Friends group such as the Friends of the Great South West Walk or one of Victoria's many bushwalking clubs, extraordinary things can be achieved when passionate people come together around a shared purpose. Events like FedWalks are built on thousands of hours of volunteer effort, local knowledge, goodwill, and a commitment to creating memorable experiences for others.
Bushwalking Victoria is immensely proud of FedWalks, its long tradition, and its place as the premier showcase for bushwalking in Victoria. The Friends of the Great South West Walk have set a very high standard, and everyone involved should be proud of what they achieved.
I now look forward to working with the Maroondah Bushwalking Club as preparations begin for FedWalks 2027. The club has an exciting opportunity to build on this success while adding its own character and strengths to the event. I have seen enough of the way they work to be confident that Maroondah will continue the proud tradition of bringing Victoria's bushwalking community together and showcasing the very best our state has to offer.
