The volunteers at the Great Dividing Trail Association have just released a wonderful new 144 page guidebook covering the 84km Lerderderg Track between Daylesford and Bacchus Marsh.
It is expected to become an essential companion for walkers, bike
riders and tourists wanting to experience the remote beauty of the Lerderderg River and its V-shaped gorge, as well as the region’s rich cultural heritage.
The Lerderderg Track guidebook will act as a companion to the GDTA’s highly successful, award-winning Goldfields Track Walk or Ride Guide. More than map spreads, the guidebook sandwiches the large scale 1:17,500 ratio maps & accompanying track notes between essays on the Lerderderg’s wildly diverse natural beauty and vivid slices of its cultural heritage, people and places.
“Although close to Melbourne, the Lerderderg’s formidable, complex terrain has rendered it largely inaccessible - until now.”
Huge thanks to the GDTA for creating this guidebook. With the ongoing demand for rescues in the Lerderderg, the guidebook, together with their improved signage, will help hikers to be better prepared to explore the area safely.

What do you really know about the group you’re walking with?
Joining a group walk is a fantastic way to explore new trails, meet like-minded people, and enjoy nature safely. But even in good company, your safety is ultimately your responsibility. Being prepared means you can relax, enjoy the scenery, and have fun knowing you’re ready for whatever the trail throws at you.
Just never assume someone else will take care of everything.

UPDATE FROM Parks Victoria ON THE GRAMPIANS PEAKS TRAIL
Grampians Peaks Trail - Re-opening to day walking Monday 10th November (sections C3-C5 & S1-S2)
The central section and southern sections of the Grampians Peaks Trail (C3-C5 and S1-S2) will re-open for day walking only on Monday the 10th of November 2025.
This section was heavily impacted by the 2024/25 Summer bushfires and incorporates the trail from Borough Huts Campground to Griffin Trailhead (including section S1 –S2 Yarram Gap Road to Griffin fireline).
The Barri Yalug, Duwul, Durd Durd, Yarram and Wannon Hike-in Campgrounds and facilities will remain closed, as works take place to repair damaged toilets, water tanks, elevated walkways, tent platforms, shelters, and signage.
Please note:
Drinking water is available at serviced water tanks only, located at Grampians Peaks Trail Road crossings. Important: drinking water is not available at the Hike-in Campgrounds. Hikers must adjust accordingly and carry sufficient drinking water.
Toilet facilities are available at Borough Huts, Jimmy Creek, Kalymna and Wannon Crossing campgrounds.
Mount William Road is closed until further notice, and vehicle access to the Mount William Carpark is unavailable.
Please see the Plan and Prepare Guide for more information on how to plan and prepare, before accessing the Grampians Peaks Trail.
Please remember, this fire affected landscape is fragile. Stay on formed tracks and be mindful that walking track and surrounding forest conditions have changed.

Police are undertaking a rescue operation for an 18-year-old man who was caught in blizzard conditions near Mount Buller overnight.
The rescue is the second in the region in 24 hours after a 49-year-old hiker needed assistance off the mountain on Tuesday evening.
Police say conditions can quickly turn and are asking visitors to the alpine regions to be prepared for sudden weather changes. ABC Melbourne

A timely reminder that alpine conditions demand alpine preparation, at any time of year, even in the warmer months. You know what they say, it you don't like the weather in Victoria, just wait 5 minutes, and that cannot be more true than in the mountains. Bushwalking Victoria recently published an article on "what preparation for alpine conditions" really means: bushwalkingvictoria.org.au/alpine-walks-demand-alpine-preparation-any-time-of-the-year/. Certainly worth a read before you head up into the mountains this green season. ... See MoreSee Less
