About the Walk

Overview

A spectacular gorge walk with rugged terrain, grand views and amazing rock formations. The walk starts with a steep ascent to Quarry Picnic Area. It takes in Eastern Viewpoint, Picture Point and Western Viewpoint with their wonderful views, including that of Blackwood Pool.</p> <p>Blackwood Pool is the largest pool in the gorge and is home to platypus. The track goes south along the Werribee River back to the start point at Miekles Point. Initial section is all on track. Along the river the position of the trail depends on the river height. There is some rock scrambling along the river. In places, fixed steel cables help you sidle around rocks. Unlikely to get wet feet unless the river level is high. 200m change in elevation, with a steep ascent at the beginning of the walk and a steep descent to the river. Walking poles are useful.

The Walk in Detail

Start: Meikles Point picnic area.

1 Walk north on Werribee Gorge Circuit Wk to the Quarry picnic area. Continue north-west, via park entrance and Hanson's Farm, and pass the junction with Centenary Tk. Keep left and continue south on Werribee Gorge Circuit Wk, swinging west to Western Viewpoint. Continue west to Picnic Point. Continue north to Eastern Viewpoint. Continue west to Blackwood Pool. Distance 7km.

2 Walk south-east along a rocky and uneven footpad beside the Werribee River, passing Needles Beach and Lions Head Beach to the walk end point. The last 200m is a made surface. Distance 3.5km.

End: Meikles Point picnic area.

Getting There

76 km From Melbourne on the Western Highway/Freeway (M8) past Bacchus Marsh and take the Myrniong exit. Turn left onto Pentland Hills Road for 1.4 km then right onto Myers Road, following this road for 3.7 km past Quarry car park to Meikles Point picnic area.

Walk Precautions

Along the river, the position of the trail depends on the river height. In places, need to use fixed steel cables to sidle around rocks.
