The Walk in Detail
From the junction of O'Brien Road and Whiskey Track, follow Whiskey Track south east for approximately 3.5km to the junction with Kenworthy Track. Proceed east along Kenworthy Track for 1.5km to a small knoll before the track narrows to a foot track.
From this knoll head 26ºM down a spur to the junction of a small creek and the Lerderderg River, opposite a ruin. Cross the creek to the ruin and proceed up Nolan Track to O'Brien Road. Follow O'Briens Road north east for 50m to Ambler Lane, then north along Ambler Lane to Byers Back Track.
Follow Byers Back Track south west then north then generally west along an old water race, with some pleasant views of the Lerderderg River below, winding around fern lined gullies and through open eucalypt forest. Kangaroo Track climbs steeply at first then undulates up to O'Brien Road, then walk east along O'Brien Road for 500m back to the cars.
Getting ThereDrive towards Blackwood on the Western Highway via Melton and Bacchus Marsh, taking the Greendale-Myrniong Rd turn-off from the highway and then the Greendale-Trentham Rd to Blackwood. About 3km south of Blackwood look for O'Brien Road which is well marked on the east side. Follow O'Brien Road east for 1km to the junction with Whiskey Track on the right. Park near this junction.
This walk involves a short section of off-track navigation down a steep spur.
