About the Walk

Overview

One of the Northern Grampians highlights is Briggs Bluff with great views of Mt Gar and the surrounding Wimmera plains. In Spring, abundant and diverse wildflowers, massive rock formations and flowing Gar and Beehive Falls make this a memorable walk.

The Walk in Detail

The walk initially follows Dead Bullock Creek (no surprises where that name came from!) where there is a series of beautiful waterfalls, the Gar Falls, culminating in the highest of the falls where we will have a short break before ascending the first of a series of short climbs.  The track is very easy to follow, and is very well constructed with rock steps on the steeper sections. As we climb, we leave the forest and the enter heathlands where views across to the Mt Difficult Range and the country to the north open up.

We pass the Beehive Falls Track junction 3.2km from our starting point, then climb steeply up a gully where the work crew that constructed the steps have done some magnificent work.  After another short break in the open heathland we re-entering the eucalypt forest, through a boulder archway and on to the Briggs Bluff track junction.  At this point, we leave the Grampians Peak Trail and take the spur track out to the Bluff, being careful to follow the track markers as the path is less distinct.  The views from Briggs Bluff, approx 6km from the start of the walk, are spectacular.

After a suitable break, we backtrack to the Beehive Falls track junction, then head north east along the base of an impressive textured cliff face.  The relatively easy walking comes to an end as we descend the escarpment beside Beehive Falls very steeply.  Take care.

After admiring the falls, we cross over the footbridge and follow the track for the easy walk to the Beehive Falls carpark.

Getting There

The start is at the GPT Trail Head on the Roses Gap Road, approx 40 km from Halls Gap on sealed roads. We will drop a few cars off at the Beehive Falls carpark in the morning to enable the car shuffle at the end of the walk.

Walk Precautions

Some rock scrambling. Very steep section near Beehive Falls. Unprotected cliffs beside track and at the Bluff. Track markers can be hard to see near the Bluff. Most of walk is exposed to sun and wet weather.
