About the Walk

Overview

Commencing at the lookout with spectacular views over Lake Wartook and surrounding ranges, the walk follows the Grampians Peak Trail (GPT) mostly downhill to Halls Gap. Car Shuffle 20km each way to return most cars to the end in Halls Gap and drivers back to start of walk.

The Walk in Detail

From the Lake Wartook carpark, follow the track to the intersection with the GPT and go right to the Lake Wartook Lookout (there is no sign but it is the obvious highpoint).

Return to the GPT and continue south. Cross the unsealed Mt Difficult Rd, and continue to follow the GPT along the eastern rim of the Mt Difficult Range with informal lookouts and rock shelters making this a spectacular section of the walk.  After 2km we begin a steep descent on stone steps through a pass in the cliff line. From the bottom of the steps the trail gently descends through a wetter forested section.

At the Chatauqua Peak track junction, take the north-eastern track towards Clematis Falls and Halls Gap. After 400m there is a large boulder which offers more views north and east. Continue along for a further 1km. There is an optional short side trip to Clematis Falls to the left, otherwise take the GPT to the right and continue towards Halls Gap.  Be careful crossing Mt Victory Rd. At the T intersection, go left along the 4WD track until you arrive at the Halls Gap Recreation Reserve, thence to the Hub.

Getting There

Drive from Halls Gap along Mt Victory Rd for 9.4km and turn right onto Mt Difficult Rd. Pass the Boroka Lookout carpark on the left and continue another 4.7km to the small Lake Wartook carpark.

Walk Precautions

Steep descent down stone steps. Two road crossings.
