Walk07 MacKenzie Falls to Zumsteins (2025)

The Walk in Detail

Starting from the MacKenzie Falls trailhead at the carpark, take the MacKenzie Falls Lookout path to the right past the toilet block.  At the loop in the track after approximately 800 metres, take the clockwise option to enjoy the wonderful elevated view of the falls from the clifftop lookout.  

Complete the circuit and retrace the path back to the carpark, then follow the main MacKenzie Falls track to the Broken Falls turnoff.  After viewing Broken Falls from the lookout, return to the main track and head gradually downhill to Cranages Lookout for an excellent birds-eye view of the top of MacKenzie Falls and the valley beyond.

The next section is a steep descent of 260 steps to the base of Mackenzie Falls, but the reward is an up-close view of the power of the water crashing over the falls into the rockpool below.  From there, continue to follow the river downstream on an at-times rocky and uneven track as the rapids below the falls gradually give way to peaceful stretches of gently flowing water further downstream.

The three levels of the well-hidden Fish Falls provide ample opportunity to take a break and enjoy the views of the river valley before the final section of track along the river bank gradually flattens out and leads to the end of the walk at the scenic Zumsteins picnic area.
