About the Walk

Overview

Starting from Ironbark car park (Point Addis Rd), this walk follows coastal tracks and the beach, to Point Addis, returning via heathland and forest paths and a 4WD track to the starting point.  There are some great views and part of the walk goes along the Koorie Culture walk where a number of signs give information on cultural practices, food, plants, and animals.

The Walk in Detail

Depending on tides, this walk may be started at the Point Addis car park and walking along the beach first.

From the Ironbark car park return to Point Addis Road, turn right (north) for about 350 m to the corner of a fence on the left (west).  Follow the foot track west between the fence and the Great Ocean Road for about 700 m to Hurst Road.

Turn left (South) for 100 m down gravel Hurst road, then right (west) over a dirt mound near some short posts.  Follow this 4WD track for about 950 metres past a dam on the left to a T-junction. Turn left (south) and after about 100 metres take the left fork in the track and follow this track to the gravel Hurst road.  Turn right and follow the road as it curves around to the right. Continue along this track for approximately 2 kilometres along a gravel road to a car park at the top of a hill.  Head south along the fenced walking track to a T-junction.  Turn left, eventually getting down to a gully at the end of the beach. Walk left (east) along the beach to Point Addis and climb the steps to the car park.

From the car park, walk North down Point Addis road for 200 metres to a fenced path on the right opposite some toilets. Follow the path to steps leading to a small scenic lookout.  After checking out the view Follow the Koori Culture walk for 30 minutes where a number of signs give information on cultural practices, food, plants, and animals.  Several lookouts give splendid views of the cliffs and beach.  Continue along the Ironbark Basin track to the bottom of an incline.  While descending there are good views north across Ironbark basin to its far rim.  At the bottom of the incline turn left, following the car park sign and gradually climb through taller forest back to the starting point.

Notes:

1.  If the tide is unfavourable the walk can be done in reverse starting and finishing at Point Addis car park and go in reverse. Start by walking from Point Addis along beach.

2. Parks Victoria issued a media release on 5 August 2013 advising of a recent landslip at Jarosite Headland near Point Addis. Visitors are urged to take note of signage and avoid cliffs in the area, especially between Anglesea Beach and Southside Beach. Visitors should always take care near sandstone cliffs along the coastline as they are notoriously unstable, especially following storm events or high tides.

Getting There

From Anglesea take the Great Ocean Road towards Geelong for about 7 km.  Turn right into Point Addis Road and travel about 500 m then turn left into Ironbark car park

Walk Precautions

Take care near sandstone cliffs as they are very unstable. It is important to check tides before undertaking this walk as the beach can become impassable at high tide
