About the Walk

Overview

Starting from the Mt Sabine Rd, at Norman Track, this walk follows 4WD tracks, then walking tracks and pads to Pennyroyal Creek, then upstream along the creek to Pennyroyal falls, returning via a rough walking track to Dunse Track and hence to the start point. An optional side trip to Wymbooliel falls, adds about 2km to the walk.

The Walk in Detail

Walking Notes: Follow Norman Track to Dunse Track which is a right fork.  Continue down Dunse Track for about 3km to the foot track turnoff to the right after a total of approximately 50 minutes walking.  It is not marked, but a fence and metal gate are visible at the side of the track. The track passes to the right of the gate and is a reasonable narrow foot track which descends steeply in places to the first creek bed. The creek would need to be forded in wet weather.  There are no stepping stones but a good layer of medium-sized gravel. The footpath continues on the other bank of the creek and ascends to the top of the ridge between the two branches of the creek.  At this point, note a footpath that turns south steeply up slope. This path will be used later.  By a large tree, take a very overgrown and little used track that descends in a northeast direction down to the branch of the creek with the waterfalls. Initially this track is marked with occasional pink ribbons. Once the second creek bed is reached follow the creek upstream following pink ribbons and large arrows on pieces of board to locate the path, which crosses the creek several times, to Terrace Falls on a right tributary.  Continue up the creek to Pennyroyal Falls on the main creek (possible lunch spot). After looking at the falls, retrace your steps to the top of the ridge and follow the previously noted footpath south steeply up a slope for about 300 to 400m to a track junction.  Take the track to the left, about east.  The track will descend to a creek and then ascend to another ridge and turn southwards.  Follow this track south to a T-junction.  If you wish, take the track to the left, east to Wymbooliel Falls. Otherwise, continue in a south westerly direction to return to Dunse Track and then left to Norman Track and back to the start.

Getting There

Drive to Lorne, then take Deans Marsh Rd out of Lorne. After 10.4 km turn left onto the Mt Sabine Rd. After 4.3 km, park at the Norman Track junction on the right. There is room for about 7 or 8 cars.

Walk Precautions

This walk should not be attempted after heavy rains. As some tracks are poorly marked and overgrown, and slippery rocks may be encountered on creek crossings, it is suitable for fit and experienced walkers only.
