About the Walk
Overview
Sample the varied scenery and mining relics of the upper reaches of the Lerderderg River. The walk includes a satisfying hill in the morning, and a pleasant stroll along a water race above the river in the afternoon.
The Walk in Detail
From the Recreation Reserve return to Simmons Reef Road. Follow Simmons Reef Road west to Skinners Road. Take this road south to reach the Great Dividing Trail, then west along the trail to the Garden of St Erth, approximately 2km from the reserve.
From the Jack Cann Reserve adjacent to the garden, head uphill along the Easter Monday Track. At a four-way junction continue straight ahead (uphill and to the west) to Fosters Lookout. Continue west to New Sultan Road. Go south to the Blackwood Ridge Road and follow this west to McLaughlins Lookout for a rest stop.
Descend north to the Lerderderg River on Green Gully Track. Lunch is beside the river, at the foot of Tram Creek. After lunch head south-easterly along the Lerderderg Heritage River Trail, back towards the Garden of St Erth along an old water race. Follow a bush track over Simmons Reef Road back to the Recreation Reserve.
Getting There
Drive to Blackwood on the Western Highway via Melton and Bacchus Marsh, taking the Greendale-Myrninong Rd turn-off from the highway and then the Greendale -Trentham Rd to Blackwood.
