About the Walk
Overview
This off-track walk offers a sense of remoteness near the historic gold mining town of Walhalla, exploring the Aberfeldy River from Barnes Lookout.
The Walk in Detail
This walk is for the more hardy and adventurous. The walk starts at Barnes Lookout on the Walhalla Road, about 9km north of Walhalla. Commence by heading west to a knoll, then south–west down a broad spur to the Aberfeldy River. On reaching the river, turn north and wade up stream or walk on the bank. After approximately 2km arrive at a tunnel, a landmark that is a seldom visited site in this part of Gippsland. Continue to follow the river upstream for a further 2km, keeping to the right bank where possible, until locating an old fire break on a south facing spur. Walk up the spur to a knoll then follow the ridge line and another spur back to Barnes Lookout and then to the start of the walk. You will get wet on this mostly off track walk. It is advisable to have a towel and change of clothes in the vehicle for your return from this walk.
