About the Walk

Overview

A predominately off-track walk in the Walhalla Historic Area south of the railway line.

The Walk in Detail

From the station, walk south uphill on Old Coach Road to just past Little Joe's Creek. Leave the road and commence walking on Sargent's Firewood Tramway # 12. After viewing Little Joe's mine site continue along the tramway for a distance of approximately 2 km to reach Weeping Rock. This tramway is quite overgrown. A second mine site, partially blocked, as well as some old house sites can be seen along the way. After viewing Weeping Rock you need to scramble up the left side of the rock and follow the right hand branch of the Happy Creek in a southerly direction to meet the A-21 track. This section is quite challenging, you cover a distance of 750m with a vertical climb of 200m.
Walk in a west south-west direction following a well-defined track along the ridge of Stockriders Spur for approximately 1km. At this point, leave the track and drop down in a south west direction to cross the Thomson River in the bypassed horseshoe Bend section. Turn right and walk towards the inlet and then retrace steps and continue to view the outlet of the Horseshoe Bend Tunnel (1.2km's). This area has a rich gold mining history and the tunnel is an engineering feat well worth seeing. Follow zigzag track uphill to the Goldfield's Rail trail and follow to Thomson Station.
This walk is predominately off-track, it is recommended to wear long sleeve top and long pants or shorts with gaitors. We found that glasses were of benefit to protect eyes.
