About the Walk

Overview

This circuit walk will visit old mining and logging towns and follow a section of<br />historic rail trail and tramway line.

The Walk in Detail

Follow Donald Lane west for 0.5km to the junction with the Old Lyonville Track, then north through old growth forest, crossing Domino Road and onto the marked Domino-Trentham Trail. After the trail has been heading west for about 1km leave the trail and walk north off trail for 100m to meet the old Trentham to Daylesford rail line. This is now a rail trail.

Follow the rail trail west for 1.5km to Lyonville, taking time to look at an old handmade brick tunnel and crossing over an old trestle bridge. From Lyonville cross the Daylesford-Trentham Road then follow the historic tramway north east for 1.5km to the picnic ground at Lyonville Springs for lunch.

After lunch follow Springs Road south east for 1km to the Daylesford-Trentham Road, then follow the main road south west for about 200m to Dirty Track. Follow Dirty Track south west then S to cross the old Trentham to Daylesford Rail Trail. Cross the rail trail to pick up the Old Lyonville Track. Follow this south east, then south then east, crossing Domino Creek, back to the cars in Newbury, going past old growth and new growth forest.

Getting There

Drive to Blackwood on the Western Highway via Melton and Bacchus Marsh, taking the Greendale-Myrninong Rd turn-off from the highway and then the Greendale-Trentham Rd to Blackwood.  From Blackwood follow the Greendale to Trentham Road north about 10km to the old mining town of Newbury. The walk starts at Donald Lane at the northern end of Newbury.

Walk Precautions

Some off track walking is required to gain the rail trail. Crossing Domino Creek may be slippery in wet conditions.
