About the Walk

Overview

This walk samples the varied scenery and mining relics of the upper reaches of the Lerderderg River, including remnants of Crown Dam. A highlight of the walk is the Lower Lerderderg River Heritage Walk.

The Walk in Detail

All on track. 325m change in elevation. River crossing.

Start: Jack Cann Reserve.

Walk initially south-west near the Easter Monday Tk along the ridge above the quarry, then follow the ridge west to the junction with Ottie Tk. There is a steep climb near the start, followed by a more moderate climb. Distance 2.5km.

Turn left onto Ottie Tk and walk south to the junction with Blackwood Ridge Tk. Turn right onto Blackwood Ridge Tk and walk west to the junction with Green Gully Tk, passing McLaughlins Lookout and a turn-off to Wheeler Tk on the way. Distance 1.5km.

Turn right onto Green Gully Tk. The first part of Green Gully Tk is eroded, rough and slippery and descends steeply. Walk north to the junction with Wheeler Tk. Continue north on Wheeler Tk to the junction with Lerderderg Rd. Distance 3.5km.

Cross Lerderderg Rd to the Lower Lerderderg Heritage River Wk. After a very short distance the Lower Lerderderg Heritage River Wk swings south-east. The Lower Lerderderg Heritage River Wk is initially a bush track and becomes a water race near the northern junction with the Ottie Tk. Continue to the walk end point. Distance 5km.

End:  Jack Cann Reserve.

Getting There

Drive to Blackwood on the Western Highway via Melton and Bacchus Marsh, taking the C318 exit and turning right. After 6.4 km turn right to stay on C318 and in 10.7km in Blackwood, turn left onto Simmons Reef Road . After 1.4 km take a sharp left to stay on Simmons Reef Rd and in 450 km you will reach the Garden of St Erth and Jack Cann Reserve. Please park away from Garden of St Erth as the closer parking spots are for visitors to the Garden.  Click here for a map of Blackwood showing the recreation reserve.

 

Walk Precautions

Some rough and slippery tracks. The water race is undercut in places.
