About the Walk

Overview

A circuit walk along forest roads and tracks through typical Wombat State Forest at the headwaters of the Campaspe River visiting two historic sites at Anderson's Mill and Firth Park.

The Walk in Detail

The walk follows the track gently downhill through pleasant open forest to the old site of Andersons Mill. Little remains but an impressive sawdust heap to remind us of past frenzies. Crossing an upper tributary of the Campaspe River the track wanders west to Firth Park a memorial to Joseph Firth, former head Gardner at Government Cottage, Mt Macedon in the 1870s. Follow forest tracks back to the cars, criss-crossing Firth Road on several occasions.  See walk map for details.

Getting There

Drive to Trentham via Calder Highway, Gisborne and Woodend.  At Woodend take the Trentham Rd and in Trentham turn into Bridge St to the T intersection at Cranneys Lane (16.1km). Turn onto the dirt road. Continue straight ahead, following the signs to Firth Park. Pass the Firth Park turn-off and turn left into Burnt Mill Rd. The walk commences at the track junction 200m on the left.
