About the Walk

Overview

This short walk takes in three of Werribee Gorge's best lookouts, with views into the gorge and across the surrounding countryside. The walk descends into the valley to include a section of the aqueduct track at the base of the spectacular Werribee Gorge. The walk is suitable for most ages and fitness levels, but some bushwalking experience is desirable. There are a few short steep ascents and descents. 150m change in elevation.

The Walk in Detail

This short walk takes in three of Werribee Gorge's best lookouts, with views into the gorge and across the surrounding countryside. The walk descends into the valley to include a section of the aqueduct track at the base of the spectacular Werribee Gorge. The walk is suitable for most ages and fitness levels, but some bushwalking experience is desirable. There will be ample time to enjoy the views and to get an appreciation of some of the geological processes that have been at work in the area. All on track; some rough surfaces and narrow footpads. There are a few short steep ascents and descents. 150m change in elevation.

Start: Quarry picnic area car park

1. Climb Werribee Gorge Circuit Track north and then walk west. Pass the turnoff to Centenary Track. Keep left and continue south and then west on Werribee Gorge Circuit Track, passing the turnoff to Short Circuit Walk, to Eastern Viewpoint. Keep right and continue west to Picnic Point. Then walk north to Western Viewpoint. Distance 2km.

2. Retrace steps to the junction with Short Circuit Walk. Turn right onto Short Circuit Walk and walk south. The track descends steeply to the junction with Aqueduct Track, where the aqueduct bridge crosses Kellys Creek. Turn right onto Aqueduct Track and walk north-west to the site of a former water measuring weir, known as Darkes Falls. Distance 3.9km.

3. Retrace steps along Aqueduct to junction with Short Circuit Walk and then continue east to the walk end point. Distance 1.2km.

End: Meikles Point picnic area.

Getting There

75 km From Melbourne on the Western Highway/Freeway (M8) past Bacchus Marsh and take the Myrniong exit. Turn left onto Pentland Hills Road for 1.4 km then right onto Myers Road, following this road for 2.8 km to Quarry car park. Take at least one vehicle on 1.25 km to Meikles Point picnic area for the car shuffle.
