Taradale & District Walking Group

Activities

  • Day walks

In 1987, when the club was first conceived by several Taradale locals, it was principally seen as a way of promoting health & companionship.  The first members walked with the much larger Cobaw Club from Kyneton, but as interest & membership grew and its focus altered to matters of environment and town beautification, the group changed from occasional weekend walks to its regular Wednesday roster and in 1994 became the Taradale Walking & Landcare Group.  Another name change in 1997 saw the group become Taradale & District Walking & Landcare Group as members joined from surrounding areas, Faraday, Elphingston, Malmsbury & a large number from Castlemaine.  In 2008, due to increasing diversity of interests, the name once again changed and we are now the Taradale & District Walking Group Inc.

Throughout this time the principles have remained almost unchanged.  A regular 5-6 kilometre walk in the beautiful bush so plentiful in this area, followed by a morning tea with lots of camaraderie, friendship, affordable weekends away, support when needed and exercise, all done with the minimum of bureaucracy.

Over the 20 years of the groups existence many projects & initiatives have been undertaken:

  • The Town Walks Project -Plotting, clearing , making accessible & signing 7 tracks in the immediate Taradale area
  • General Environmental Program -Willow & Gorse reduction, tree planting & the creation of the Fairy Dell.
  • Coliban Main Channel Walking Track – The group were instrumental in opening the Coliban Main Channel Walking Track and makes use of it regularly.
  • Taradale Mineral Springs Reserve – As this is the focal point of many of the Walking Groups activities, they have been actively involved in it's improvement and maintenance.
