About the Walk

Overview

An interesting walk through open and wooded terrain via the Tawonga Huts, to the top of Mt Jaithmathang. Beautiful flowers in summer and great scenery.

The Walk in Detail

From the Pretty Valley Pondage cross the pondage and follow the 4WD Fainter Fire track to Tawonga Huts.

Just beyond the huts a foot track leads off left (west) marked to Mt Jaithmathang. Follow the footpath west to a saddle and then north to Mt Jaithmathang.

Return by the same route.

Note: some older maps and signage may refer to Mt Niggerhead which was the former name for Mt Jaithmathang.

Getting There

Travel to Falls Creek on the Hume Highway to Wangaratta.  From Wangaratta take the Great Alpine Rd (route B500) to Myrtleford, Bright, Mount Beauty and then Falls Creek village. From Falls Creek Village continue by car on the Bogong High Plains Road to the Pretty Valley Road. Turn right up the Pretty Valley Road. Keep right at the turn off to Ruined Castle and then keep left on the road past Mt McKay. Turn right when the road from Ruined Castle rejoins the road and descend into Pretty Valley. Park the cars at the pondage.

Walk Precautions

This walk is in mountain terrain, above the tree line. Extreme weather conditions including snow and severe winds can be experienced at short notice at any time of year. Adequate clothing and equipment is essential.
