The Mt Hotham area was affected by bushfires in February 2013 and this area of the Alpine National Park was closed as at 15 February 2013. It is essential that you check the Parks Victoria website for the latest information and details on park and track closures prior to visiting this area.
This is an excellent walk because the first part is along the Razorback ridge with excellent views all the way. In front is the imposing summit of Mt Feathertop, beckoning the walker along. Mt Feathertop, especially from this aspect, looks like a real mountain. The Razorback ridge is more or less level for most of the way until the final ascent.
Near Federation Hut the track leads off to the summit. It is a 200m climb all of which is above the tree line. The view from the top is spectacular and extends for 360 degrees. What makes it special is that it is different in every direction.
There is a potential option to return to Harrietville via Bungalow Spur. Looking at the map it appears difficult but in fact the track follows an old bridle track that is perfectly graded and makes for easy walking. However the logistics of arranging a car shuffle will probably mean that the return will be along the Razorback to the start point.
This is a long walk but well worthwhile - 19km + 3km for walk to summit. This distance applies to both options of the walk, however the return via Bungalow Spur will be about 2 hours shorter than the return along the Razorback.
Drive to Bright via the Hume Highway, Wangaratta, Myrtleford. Continue on the Great Alpine Road, drive to Diamantina Hut about 2km west of Mt Hotham Village. Alternatively you can go via Gippsland and Omeo.
