Cape Schanck – Gunnamatta – Cape Schanck

The Walk in Detail

The start of the walk takes us down the boardwalk to visit Pebble Beach and views of Pulpit Rock (1), from here we backtrack to the car park and follow Cape Schanck Road(2) for about 500 meters distance, turning left into a dirt road that ends at a car park and continues as Fingal Beach walking tracks (3).

From here we follow the walking track past a couple of lookouts with great views of the coast, Selwyns Fault (4) and past the National Golf Course (5) before dropping down through coastal heath scrub to Gunnamatta Beach.

From this point we walk to the West along the beautiful and wild Gunnammatta Beach (6). This beach can be like a sheet of glass (not very often), or a raging, turbulent wash of white water and huge waves (more often). No matter the conditions, this beach is very special. We follow the beach to the Gunnammatta Surf Club car park(7) where there are toilets.

From here we retrace our steps to our entry point on the beach, but instead of taking the track we follow the beach to the base of the cliffs. As the tide will be out we can walk around the cliffs to Fingals Beach (8). If the wave action allows we can explore rock pools and take in the interesting geographical formation of Selwyns Fault (4).

At Fingal Beach we start the climb up the 439 steps (9) to meet our original track, where we retrace our steps back to the Cape Schanck car park.
