The Walk in Detail

Walk Description: Starting at the Blackwood Recreation Reserve, walk west 300m to the site of an old Chinese village by the Lerderderg River, then walk up Reserve Road and Simmons Reef Road into Martin Street (Greendale/Trentham Road) and walk south for a short distance. Visit the nearby Blackwood Museum, and from there go to the nearby Blackwood Cemetery. From the cemetery walk north down Byers Road passing old churches, a giant oak tree and old shops to Whalebone Road, and then past old miners cottages to pick up the Great Dividing Trail (GDT). Walk south down the GDT then east for about 600m to the Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve. This is a good place for a break. Toilets and picnic tables are available.  Cross the Lerderderg River on the bridge and walk easterly for approximately 1km along the Great Dividing Trail to North Blackwood Road. Walk west along North Blackwood Road for a short distance and cross the Lerderderg River at the bridge to Golden Point Road. Continue west along this past the Old Royal Mail Hotel site, then back to the Blackwood mineral springs and the Great Dividing Trail, walking past the Blackwood Caravan Park. From the mineral springs retrace the route along the Great Dividing Trail to Whalebone Road and continue onto the Greendale/Trentham Road to pick up a track just north of the bridge crossing the Lerderderg River, and then follow the Lerderderg River back to the Recreation Reserve.
