Mt Franklin to Jim Crow Creek

Mt Franklin Reserve

From the top of Mount Franklin to Jim Crow Creek near Franklinford, traverses and interprets much of the former Mt Franklin Aboriginal Protectorate (1842-9), one of the best-documented (but not publicly recognized) sites of early Aboriginal contact in south-eastern Australia. The first and final parts of the walk include a walk around the Mount Franklin crater rim, and Clarkes Pool, on a billabong on Jim Crow Creek. Requires a car shuffle.

Mt Hope

Wombat State Forest

The walk covers an area rich in wildflowers (springtime), as well as forest timber. Old gold prospecting activity is in evidence in the area. The walk is significantly off-track over some steep hills and 4WD tracks. The final part of the walk along the early stages of the Werribee River is very picturesque.

This walk has two options: an easy 7km return walk to Mt Loch or a 12.5km medium walk to Mt Loch and Spargo Hut. There are great views from Mt Loch of the High Plains, Mt Hotham and the rugged east face of Mt Feathertop.

Pennyroyal Falls Circuit

Great Otway National Park

Starting from the Mt Sabine Rd, at Norman Track, this walk follows 4WD tracks, then walking tracks and pads to Pennyroyal Creek, then upstream along the creek to Pennyroyal falls, returning via a rough walking track to Dunse Track and hence to the start point. An optional side trip to Wymbooliel falls, adds about 2km to the walk.

Point Addis - Ironbark Basin Circuit

Great Otway National Park

Starting from Ironbark car park (Point Addis Rd), this walk follows coastal tracks and the beach, to Point Addis, returning via heathland and forest paths and a 4WD track to the starting point.  There are some great views and part of the walk goes along the Koorie Culture walk where a number of signs give information on cultural practices, food, plants, and animals.

It involves walking along attractive and challenging spurs with lovely views into the gorge and a challenging walk beside or in the Lerderderg River. From Mt Blackwood there are views to the surrounding countryside, Melbourne and the You Yangs.  A steep descent and climb and frequent river crossings. Expect wet feet.

Tarilta Creek, Six Chimneys and a Ruin

Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park

This walk includes a creek gorge and relics of the gold mining days. It is through dry open forest with some rocky sections and numerous dry creek crossings. Approximately 40% of the route is off-track in open forest with the remainder on the Great Dividing Trail and vehicle tracks.
