About the Walk

Overview

This walk takes in some typical Lerderderg Gorge country, with a narrow gorgelike creek and views into the gorge and surroundings, using walking and vehicle tracks.  The 16.5km option requires a 2.5km car shuffle.

The Walk in Detail

Starting from the junction of O'Brien Road and Whiskey Track, the walk proceeds 4km  south east down Whiskey Track to Vodka Track, then descends into Whiskey Creek. Some mild scrambling along the creek bed for 1.8km follows before joining the Lerderderg River. Cross the river (be prepared for wet feet), then scramble steeply up to the track on the ridge above. The river is followed northerly for 800m, initially along a ridge then down to the river to join the Cowan Track. Follow Cowan Track north for 3.6km to O'Brien Road, from where the walk branches off shortly afterwards onto Trout Track. Follow Trout Track north for 1.2km, descending steeply to a shady lunch spot at the ruins near Sardine Creek.

After lunch cross Sardine Creek and climb steeply north up Trout Track for 1km to join Ambler Lane. Follow Ambler Lane south west to cross the Lerderderg River, then up to join O'Brien Road, where the car shuffle left a vehicle or two. Otherwise walk the 2.5km along O'Brien Road to the cars at Whiskey Track.

Cautions:
This walk includes two river crossings and two creek crossings. Wet feet are unavoidable. For safe crossings it is recommended that boots remain on to avoid possible injury from submerged sticks etc. The scramble along Whiskey Creek also has the potential for slippery rocks, and caution is required in this section.

Getting There

Drive towards Blackwood on the Western Highway via Melton and Bacchus Marsh, taking the Greendale-Myrninong Rd turn-off from the highway and then the Greendale-Trentham Rd to Blackwood.  About 2 km south of Blackwood turn into O'Brien Road which is is well marked on the east side. Follow O'Brien Road east for 1.5 km to the junction with Whiskey Track on the right.  A 2.5km car shuffle east along O'Brien Road to Ambler Lane is recommended.

Walk Precautions

There are 2 river crossings and 2 creek crossings. For safe crossings leave boots on to avoid possible injury from submerged sticks etc. The scramble along Whiskey Creek requires caution due to potentially slippery rocks.
