About the Walk

Overview

A through-walk in the Wombat State Forest and across a variety of landscapes. It includes historic and scenic points of interest with panoramic views from Blue Mountain and its surrounds.  Car shuffle required.

The Walk in Detail

Start at the park and walk west along the main street to find Blue Mountain Road.  Follow this south west through countryside and enter forest. Cross Domino Road and continue in a south westerly direction to the Greendale-Trentham road, cross it and enter the forest.  Take the 4WD track in southerly direction avoiding minor leads on the way, to reach the site of the old Amelia gold mine.  Take a left turn (east) and follow the boundary fence turning right (south) to cross Stony Creek.  The minor track ends at Tower track (a good unsealed road).

Turn right up Tower Track to ascend Blue Mountain, passing an old graveyard near the summit.  After a rest break descend south easterly through bush at the back of Blue Mountain by following a fence-line.  At the bottom turn left on meeting Pronks Track and walk to a right hand turn. Take this track south to find Yankee Gully Road.  Turn left and walk for about 1km east to meet Albion Track.

Go right (due south) for about 700m to find Nuggety Track. Follow the track and cross Nuggety Creek to find Old Blackwood Road. Follow this to cross the Lerderderg River and enter Blackwood.  Go through the town, take the Simmons Reef Road and return to the Blackwood Recreation Reserve.

Getting There

Drive to Trentham via Balckwood by taking the Western Highway past Melton and Bacchus Marsh.  Take the C318 turnoff to Greendale/Backwood and follow the Greendale/Myrniong Rd to Balckwood.  Leave car/s at the Blackwood Recreation Reserve and continue of to Trentham.  In Trentham park by a small reserve opposite the Cosmopolitan Hotel at the junction of the Greendale-Trentham road in the main street.

Walk Precautions

Gaiters or long trousers may be preferred for the 500m scrub descent off Blue Mountain
