About the Walk
Overview
This walk explores part of the Surf Coast. Starting from Point Addis car park, the walk descends to the beach, past rugged cliffs and a headland. The walk then ascends up to a clifftop walk through heathland and woods, back to Anglesea.
The Walk in Detail
The walk follows a gravel road, 4WD walking tracks and sandy beaches.
Parks Victoria issued a media release on 5 August 2013 advising of a recent landslip at Jarosite Headland near Point Addis. Visitors are urged to take note of signage and avoid cliffs in the area, especially between Anglesea Beach and Southside Beach. Visitors should always take care near sandstone cliffs along the coastline as they are notoriously unstable, especially following storm events or high tides.
Descend the stairs on the west side of the car park down to the beach. Note the first 'Surf Coast Walk' marker as you go down the steps. Head west along the beach to the rocky headland and yellow Surf Coast marker 87W. You may notice some wonderful features (like mini Bungles Bungles) along the cliff faces as you walk along.
Follow the signed walking track up over the headland and along the clifftops. The well-defined track runs parallel to the coast through open heathland and then into sheoaks and stunted gums to another Surf Coast marker. Turn right (as indicated by the marker) and walk 100m to the next marker. Turn left on to a 4WD road.
Follow the 4WD road to a management gate and cleared area. Turn left about 30m after the gate. The track descends steeply to a T-junction with a gravel road. Follow the gravel road to a barrier on the edge of the caravan park.
You will notice a bitumen path marked 'Surf Coast Walk', that runs alongside (not in) the Caravan Park. Follow this path and a left turn will take you to the beach. You will note the Surf Coast Marker 89W as you go down to the beach. Follow the headland around to the mouth of the Anglesea River and follow the river back towards the bridge and the Great Ocean Rd. If the river is in flood you will need to get permission to walk through the caravan park.
Drivers will be required to go back to the start to collect the cars.
Getting There
As this is a one-way walk it is necessary to leave a car in the park down by the Anglesea River near the completion of the walk to enable you to get back to collect the cars left at the start (Melways 196 F6).
To get to the start of the walk from Anglesea travel on the Great Ocean Rd towards Geelong for 7km and turn right into Point Addis Rd and travel along to the end of the road to the car park (Melways 611 D10).
Walk Precautions
Take care near sandstone cliffs as they are very unstable. If the Anglesea river is in flood you will need to get permission to walk through the caravan park.
