About the Walk
Overview
This easy walk is a good introduction to the alpine area and high plains. The walk is on fire trails and beside one of the aqueducts that feed water into Rocky Valley Dam. Excellent views, interesting vegetation and flowers in spring and early summer.
The Walk in Detail
Walk NE up the Big River Fire Track and through the locked gates. Veer right at the signpost to Kelly's and Fitzgerald's huts, then continue right on the 4WD track where the pole line diverges left towards the huts.
Follow the track as it curves SE then south around Marum Point and descends to the aqueduct. Turn right (west) and follow the Langford East Aqueduct track to Langford Gap. There is a large quarry like area and a bridge over the aqueduct at Langford Gap.
Cross the aqueduct and walk up to the Bogong High Plains Road. Turn right (north) and follow the road to the start point.
Note that there is a pleasant lake adjoining the aqueduct about 1.5 km before Langford Gap which may offer a site for lunch.
Getting There
Travel to Falls Creek on the Hume Highway to Wangaratta. From Wangaratta take the Great Alpine Rd (route B500) to Myrtleford, Bright, Mount Beauty and then Falls Creek village. From Falls Creek Village continue by car on the Bogong High Plains Road until the start of the Big River Fire Track just past Watchbed Creek at 5.2 km from Falls Creek. Park the cars at the intersection.Walk Precautions
