About the Walk

Overview

This walk starts at the Tidal River footbridge, takes you to the Northern end of iconic Squeaky Beach, and returns (3 Km each way).

The Walk in Detail

This walk starts at the Tidal River footbridge, takes you to the Northern end of iconic Squeaky Beach, and returns (3 Km each way).

Cross Tidal River on the footbridge and follow the path left towards Pillar Point. After a steep pitch (have a rest!), there is an excellent viewpoint overlooking Tidal River, with Mt Oberon in the background. At the next track junction, go straight ahead towards Pillar Point and Squeaky Beach (right turn leads to Tidal Overlook). Shortly (about 20 m) the track divides for Squeaky Beach to the right and Pillar Point straight ahead.

From the junction, you can take the path down to Pillar Point (720 m each way). This viewpoint is marked by the Prom’s typical huge granite boulders, from the top of which there are views in all directions. ‘The Glennies’ are a prominent set of small islands to the West, and, on a clear day, you can also see the enigmatic Cleft Island (more commonly known as ‘Skull Rock’) to the South (best viewed from ‘The Wanderers’ boat trip from Tidal River).

Back at the junction, take the track to the left to Squeaky Beach for 1.1 km. After another 800 m the Northern end of the beach is a good spot for morning tea. There are toilets nearby at the Squeaky
Beach carpark (300 m).

Enjoy the beach barefoot, hear the squeak made by the rounded grains of quartz sand, paddle in the cool waters of Bass Strait and admire the beautiful red lichen-coloured rocks at the Northern end of
the beach. This is the Prom!

Retrace your footsteps to Tidal River. Note that the beach walking (on soft sand) is generally tiring, particularly if the weather is hot, and the climb back up from Squeaky Beach is exposed and lacking in shade
