About the Walk

Overview

An interesting walk with a little climbing. The Ted Errey nature circuit includes interpretive signs about the rich flora along the route. Four lookouts provide views over the flat plains to Port Phillip Bay and to the rugged hills of the goldfields. Part of the walk follows the Stony Creek through scenic and twisting Anakie Gorge. Mostly on clearly defined tracks. 150m change in elevation. A number of easy crossings of Stony Creek.

The Walk in Detail

Start: Anakie Gorge picnic ground.

1. Walk west beside Stony Ck to the Ted Errey turnoff, crossing the creek several times on the way via large stepping stones. At the first track junction turn left onto Nelsons Tk, and walk south on an initially steep rocky ridge to Nelsons Lookout (signposted). Return to main track and follow the Nelsons Tk south and then west to the gate near Switch Rd. At the gate turn left onto a marked walking track to the junction with Aqueduct Tk. Turn left onto Aqueduct Tk which loops back to meet Switch Rd further south. Pass through the gate and turn left onto Switch Rd and walk south to the junction with Redbeak Tk. Distance 6km.

2. Turn right onto Redbeak Tk, and pass through the gate. Pass the first track junction marked Outlook Tk to the right and continue west to the junction with Outlook Tk. Turn right onto Outlook Tk and walk initially north and then east to The Outlook. Return to the main track, turn right and walk north on a rough gravel track. Cross the swampy ground on the boardwalk and continue north-east to the junction with the Stony Ck Tk. Distance 1.5km.

3. Turn right onto Stony Ck Tk, pass through the Stony Ck picnic ground and continue east, crossing the creek several times, to the walk start point. Distance 2.7km.

End: Anakie Gorge picnic ground.

Getting There

Get there via the M1 (Princes Freeway) and take the Werribee exit. Leave Werribee to the SE on Bulban Road then right onto Edgars Road, left onto Kirk Bridge Road, right onto Little River Ripley Road, left onto C704 (Bacchus Marsh - Geelong Road), right onto Granite Road right onto Staughton Vale Road then 1.6 km north to turn left onto Gorge Road for 850 m to the Brisbane Ranges National Park - Anakie Gorge Picnic area.

Alteratively, a longer (90 km) but simpler route is via Bacchus Marsh (M8 and C704) to Granite Road etc.

Walk Precautions

Track is obscure in parts. Loose gravel may provide slip hazards on one uphill and one downhill section. Cinnamon fungus area.
